I was interested to read about this because my husband, Allen Mills', grandfather - also Allen Mills - kept the Clap Gate Inn from around 1895 or thereabouts - he and the family certainly appear on the 1901 census as living there.  I attach the relevant page.  My father in law, Arthur Mills, appears here as a 14 year old.  The family moved to Maltkiln House, Kirkby Overblow by the time of the 1911 census, where they remained for the next 50 years.

My husband was born at Maltkiln House, Kirkby Overblow, in 1936; his parents moved into Harrogate in about 1960.

Allen Mills sr was a business man with a lot of interests including boot maker as well as publican and dealer.  Although born in Wretton, Norfolk, he had moved to Leeds to join his older brother in the late 1860s.   I believe he and his wife, Elizabeth (yes - extraordinarily - Allen and Elizabeth Mills, just like me and my husband!) are buried in the churchyard at Kirkby Overblow.

Hope this is of interest - and perhaps one of these people was the ghost of Sicklinghall!!

That's fascinating, Elizabeth. I also have ancestors in Follyfoot land - my great-grandmother lived in Leeds around 1900 - 1940.

Welcome to the Forum!

Hello Elizabeth   >44<

Thank you for this very interesting information about your husband's family.  8)  My husband does his family tree but, so far anyway, he hasn't found any relatives in Yorkshire.  ;)

This sort of research is fascinating, Elizabeth. It is useful to know the family history and previously unrealised connections can be so surprising.
