I think SME stands for Sony Music Enterprises, or similar.... Sony have bought, and own, the rights to a vast amount of music and are paranoid about its unlicensed use. Back in 2005, they actually started to fit 'anti piracy' software on their music cds which unknowingly put software on your computer that was almost impossible to remove. It blocked the copying of cds, and reported your email address and other info back to Sony HQ. But after several high profile court cases, they were forced to back down and recall the affected cds.
The irony is that, once rights are sold, even the original performer couldn't give his, or her, permission to use the track. As always it's all about money.
