Leeds-Liverpool Canal locations?
« on: July 24, 2011, 03:31:16 PM »
Apologies if there's already a thread on this, the search isn't bringing up a lot.

Was wondering if anyone had figured out some of the Leeds-Liverpool canal locations? There's several that look like they might make for quite a nice walk/visit.

Johno and Rob are the experts for the Leeds locations.  There are a few photos of canal locations on pages 5 and 10 of the reunion weekend photos (in the 40th anniversary section) just to whet your appetite. ;)

Hi,

The canal locations are at Dobson Lock close to Apperley Bridge

You can park  on Apperly road close to Milman swing bridge.

Follow the canal towards Shipley

Between Bottom Farm and Idle Swing bridge (Filmed on the opposite side of the canal, undeneath the pylon and railway bridge) is one of the locations

Next to Buck Mill Swing bridge follow the path over the bridge. you can see the House to your left.
not much to see really you can't get that close. The foot path leads up to a wider track where Ron riding down on his motorbike meets Dora in the episode

Alternatively, you can drive there, Follow the A657 towards Shipley to Thackley Road on the right, down to Buck mill lane.

Buck mill lane is just a track you can probably park on Thackley Rd. then walk down taking the track through the gate.

Hope this helps

Johno

Yes - thatks Johno for your help with the locations!

By the way, welcome to the Forum, Marie-Strawberry!

 :)

Incidentally the scenes set in Liverpool "Someone, Somewhere" and "The Debt" were actually filmed in Leeds. The "Liverpool" canal scenes were filmed near what is now Granary Wharf near Leeds railway station and the bridge where Mrs Ross has her stall selling tea is just a few yards from the present Mint Hotel. And the scene in "The Debt" where the bale of paper falls in the water was filmed in Leeds city centre near a pub called the Adelphi which is still standing.

I did wonder about the wharf bit, sadly gone now in it's own way, it's as unrecognisable now from the early 90s version I remember as the early 70s version was from the 90s.

Thanks for the thumbs up on the other bits, might take a wander out there one day while the weather is still nice.  :)

??? Just a bit confused here as I thought it had been established that the Caverley Lodge swing bridge about a mile further east was the location where Dora sat. I can remember seeing some photos that showed it as the location >48<

Sadly he walked the wrong end! The Lancashire end.  ::)

Very interesting programme though with barge horses and a sign that said "No Motorcycles" on the towpath with a gate. I thought of Ron  ;D

Hi guys, I have taken some pictures for you of the Leeds canal location. I have one of where the tea stall was and one of the tower in the background when Steve is walking along. I can do a few others I've just watched Someone Somewhere and spotted a few more places I know. Can someone post them for me next to stills from the show? I'm not sure how to do it? Cheers x
