I also remember "Little Black Sambo". My mother taught 5-year olds at an Infant School and it was one of her favourite stories. She thought political correctness was ridiculous!

Did anyone read the Moomin books (by Tove Jansson) as a child? I loved them, but I think the copies I had were all old ones passed down by my elder brother and didn't have dust jackets. But I liked the drawings, which were all done by the author. Anne - do you have any of the original Finnish ones?

Great you liked them as child, me too, and I still do! Are they well known in Uk or just for the "conosseurs"? I haven't collected them, none at home but I confess very often during the summer hollidays I go to the children's section of my local library and get myself some excellent summer reading!  ;D

I'm not sure how well known the Moomins are in the UK - I guess they were popular in the 60s and 70s but not sure about nowadays - did anyone else read them?

That is a complete rip-off!!  >:( You can get exactly the same one in English with 13.30 € here in bigger bookstores. And there must be book stores in UK also that sell it in a normal retail price, which can't be THAT much more expensive!

Do any members remember the book called Fairies and Giants?  >91< This came out in the late 1960s early 70s. I had this book as a very young child and I remember there were really beautiful illustrations. 'Jack the giant killer' in particular. I did a little research and these were done by Rene Cloke. Sadly, my book was eventually chucked out and I have been heartbroken ever since  :( If anyone has a copy  ::) perhaps they could put this (and it's illustrated pages) up on here?  :)
