Another Teaser
« on: July 20, 2013, 01:07:25 PM »
Three men go into a restaurant and each order a snack costing £10
When the food arrives each gives the waiter a £10 note in payment.
The waiter takes the money to the cashier who says there is a £5
discount on orders of £30 and gives the waiter five  £1 coins to
return to the men.
The waiter decides that five does not divide by three so he pockets
£2 and gives £1 to each of the diners.
Thus each of the diners has paid £9 for his meal.
Three times nine equals twenty seven which plus the two pounds the
waiter took is twenty nine.
What happened to the other pound?

I love/hate these cos they do your head in even when you know what's going on!  >382<

The fallacy lies in the idea that because the men paid £9 each for their meal there is £27 in the till and the £2 the waiter has is on top of that. It's not. The £27 is made up of £25 in the till and £2 in the waiter's pocket. The other £3 is the change the men recieved making their payment £27 instead of £30 in the first place.  Simples.

Another way of looking at it would be.... The meals cost £25, each man had £1 change (£3), and the waiter had the remaining £2....all together that's £30.
