I know it sounds like a load of nonsense and I'm no lawyer either.   But I am an artist so I've had to be aware of this kind of stuff for a long time.

All I know is that the laws can be quite vague and variable so it's easy to get caught out even if there wasn't any malice intended.  Are we likely to get sued if a copy off the painting was posted her without all the required legal mumbo jumbo?  I doubt it.  But in today's "sue first and ask questions later" age, it pays to be a little careful.

I mean.. it would really stink if Gillian sent us a copy and the original artist and/or whatever TV studio really owns the rights got ticked at her for doing it.

You have to buy the 'rights' to anything that isn't yours in the first place I think... even if you have an original (there could be more than one original?)

The artist may well have signed away her rights to Yorkshire TV, especially if the painting was specially commissioned for the programme. So in that case I suppose the successors to YTV would own the copyright...

I can't see it being a huge issue myself - small runs of fan produced merchandise are allowed ie replica models from movies etc

I think the real issue is that the current owner might not want to copy it which is fair enough - it would be amazing to be able to see it though, just once :)

Hi everyone

I have spoken to Gillian and she says the artist worked at YTV and therefore the copyright belongs to YTV and thinking about it that must be right as Ray and I had to get the copyright from YTV to  use it for the book otherwise we would have to have asked the artist.

Maybe ITV Studios would print some, but I know it would cost

As we are talking paintings, in someone somewhere, Fulton McKay is filmed painting Dora sitting on the canal bank, I was wondering was this a propper painting or just a prop for this episode, if it is a propper painting I was wondering what happend to that one, I am quite sure that someone will know the answer as this site is quite amazing as to what information is discovered.
