Some info on this: the artist was Diana Dunn and Gillian still has the original painting  :)

Well if Gillian has/owns the orignal art work doesn't that mean she owns the copy write not the artist.

Well if Gillian has/owns the orignal art work doesn't that mean she owns the copy write not the artist.

Not at all.  I have original paintings in my home that were bought from artists.  But I still can't copy them and call it my own work.  Nor could I make prints and sell them without the artist's permission.

Remember all those fine print warnings on DVD's you see before the movie plays? You own the DVD because you paid money for it, but that doesn't mean the work isn't still copyrighted.  The law says you can't reproduce it without permission.  Same for books.  The author's words are still under copyright even if you bought the book or were given it as a gift.  ( At least that's how it works in the US. )

Copyrights can expire for written works whereupon they become public domain.  I have no idea if that happens for works of art-maybe X amount of years after the artist's death?

I do see where you are coming from, but when you buy a book you are buying a copy not the original manuscript, same with a DVD, but if you owned the original film and it was your property would you not have the rights to it, I have no legal background but it seem to me that if you bought the original of whatever, it was yours, but there again I am probably wrong on that, just my logic I suppose.
