Yorkshire Television studios to close
« on: March 04, 2009, 07:50:43 AM »
An announcement on the News this morning said that Yorkshire TV's studios and programme production at Leeds is to close, except for the local news bulletins, 'Calendar News'. Drama will end with the loss of many jobs, and programmes affected include Heartbeat. Emmerdale is filmed away from the studios and will not be axed.

YTV started in 1968 and, of course, produced Follyfoot a few years later, so we now see the end of an era.

Very Sad.    :(

Apparently they were the first purpose-built colour TV studios in Europe.

Perhaps we should have a photo and "1968 - 2009" on the "In Loving Memory" page?

Another link with the Follyfoot era gone!

Yes, very sad indeed.

Yet another icon of British TV and Britishness on it's way out.

Like the idea about the 'loving memory' thread, Rob..

What a pity - YTV made some wonderful programs over the years. I guess that's consolidation, progress and the famed "global financial crisis" in action. More wonderful regional British TV lost to the big boys... :'( :'(

Cheer up everyone - who knows, perhaps they've got some Follyfoot stuff they could auction off - photos, scripts etc....   :)

Apparently a clip of Follyfoot was shown on the BBC News in regard to the demise of Yorkshire TV.  Unfortunately I was drying my hair in another room and didn't hear hubby shouting me......drat!!!!! >:(

Hi everyone

The news bulletin with the "Follyfoot" clip can be viewed on:

Click on "BBC Look North (Leeds)".

Thanks for that, Rob.

I believe it may have been BBC News channel on Sky (formerly BBC News 24) that showed a little more than a few seconds of the opening credits.

Wonder what the FF cast think of the closure?

Emmerdale has got away with it for the time being - they renewed their deal with Harewood Estate to keep the village on for another (I think) 10 years or so, once that runs out I wonder if Granada would dare to transplant it to Lancashire?! The cast & crew use the Village Hall as a base quite often when they're filming up this end so I'm sure we'll get to find out more soon. Follyfoot was the start of a long relationship between Yorkshire Television & Harewood, I remember The New Statesman, Heartbeat & A Touch of Frost being filmed to name but a few. It's so sad, I don't expect Michael Grade will be making the long, grim trek up to Yorkshire any time soon - best to stay safe in London for the forseeable I think.

No, from what I've seen it would be as well for him to stay in London.  ITV were so excited at getting him on board - people were expecting a lot from him and Yorkshire TV must feel very let down, especially with their wonderful history of programmes.   :(

Typical accountants.

They know the price of everything, but the value of nothing.

The end of an era, indeed.
